We’ve all been there…

Your best friend invites you over to introduce you to her precious new baby. You lean over to peek into the crib and the first thought that pops into your mind is “Lawd! That is the ugliest baby I’ve ever seen!”

But what do you tell your friend? “Oh my, she’s so adorable and I can just tell she’s going to be a genius, just like her daddy!”

Babies vs. Websites

Fortunately, websites are not like babies, they don’t care what you call them.

Unfortunately, website owners are much like new parents. They love their ‘baby’ and if you dare to make fun of their new creation, be ready for a fight to break out.

Of course your ‘baby’ is the exception to the rule. It’s beautiful, it’s perfect. Isn’t it?!

The Baby Test

Invite a trusted friend to your house. Have them look at your website for a good 15 minutes while you go to the kitchen and make them a cup of coffee and yourself a drink. Preferably a strong one.

Then ask them everything that’s wrong with your site from design, ease of navigation, colors, fonts. I mean everything. This is the global overview.

Now it’s time to get down to the most important question: “Do you understand what my website is about?”

In other words, does your website have a consistent, focused message? Is it providing your visitors with useful information to keep them coming back instead of just selling a one-time product or service? Does every aspect of your website’s design support the content’s message?

Friends Will Save You Money

You will learn more in that conversation than most marketing consultants can give you in a boring thirty slide PowerPoint presentation charged at $300 an hour. (So along with that cup of coffee, you might offer your friend a piece of cake.)

Now let’s turn the tables….what don’t you like about my ‘baby’? Given the criteria that I’ve outlined above, take a moment to look around my site and leave your comments and suggestions below.

I promise I’ll still be your friend!
