YouTube’s greatest strengths is its viral velocity, but it can be YOUR greatest weakness in terms of SEO. Just take a look at the video below, “Evolution of Dance”
This video has had over 135 million plays and is one of the most popular videos on Youtube. The viral aspect of YouTube is a great way to get millions of eyes on your promotional piece for free.
The downside is that YouTube receives all the link juice from people linking to your video, while you lose valuable traffic to your site when you allow users to embed your video on their site.
I don’t recommend keeping all your videos off of YouTube, but it makes sense to host your videos on your site in certain circumstances:
- If there’s a high probability that a top level domain like a .gov or a .edu will link to your video, stay away from Youtube and host it only on your site so that you will receive all the link traffic when others link to your video.
- If the video relates to a keyword you’re trying to rank for, craft a landing page that is search engine optimized for that keyword and embed the video on that page and that page only.
Once enough sites link to your page with the video on it, you’ll see a steady rise in the search rankings for that keyword.
