Email marketing is one of the most effective ways to reach an audience with your product or service since people check their email with much greater frequency than visiting a particular website. Additionally, regular followers of your site will appreciate the convenience of getting updates delivered to their inbox rather than randomly checking back for new posts.
Growing your email list should be priority #1 from the day you start your website, but without requiring your visitors to “double opt in” to your email list you could be heading down the road to certain email marketing destruction.
“Double Opt In” simply means that once a visitor signs up for your email list, they are required to go to their inbox and click a link confirming that they indeed want to join your list.
The reasons for requiring a “double opt in” list are staightforward:
- It insures the owner of the email address that signed up for your list is actually the true owner and not a vengeful friend signing up a co-worker for tons of spam lists.
- Keeps your future emails out of the visitor’s spam box since the visitor must find the confirmation email and flag it as legitimate mail if it did end up in the spam folder.
- Trains the visitor to recognize your email address so they will open future emails from your site.
- Cuts down on your email bounce rate (the number of emails that are returned to your server).
- In the event that you want to eventually sell your website, having a large “double opt in” email list will be gold in the eyes of parties interested in purchasing your site.
