The Almighty Upper Left Corner

Content placement in the upper left corner of your website should be one of your most important considerations in your web design. It’s the first spot our eyes go to when we come to a web page.

Why is this?

Well, it has to do with how we read. We read from left to right starting at the top going to the bottom. It’s a habit we formed over the years. Next time you’re in the grocery store waiting in line, take a look at the various tabloids and you’ll notice they use this tool to sell magazines.

This is something to think about when designing websites for an English speaking audience. Yes, we know, there are exceptions to this rule where other languages are involved. For instance, Arabic speakers read from right to left. But the point remains the same, where the eye meets the page is the most valuable real estate on your site.
