Buying a captivating domain name is the first step to success on the internet, but it’s often the most under thought. Case in point, MailChimp.com. This site delivers web based email marketing, but its domain name is one of the most confusing out there.
It’s a funny play on words, but if I heard from a friend that MailChimp.com was the place to go for email marketing, this is the page I might end up on:
Yep. A domain squat. Not quite the same page as I was expecting. ThisĀ is a common problem that new webmasters and bloggers encounter. Either someone else has already captured what you thought was a clever name, or they’ve created a similar domain name that will only confuse or send your visitors off on a wild goose chase :
Lesson learned: Before you start your online business, invest some time and money in selecting the right domain. Say it out loud to yourself, to your friends. Do a Google search of your prospective domain name AND of names similar to it. Buy the different variations (malechimps.com, mailchimps.com, malechimp.com, you get the idea). A thorough search, as well as time spent thinking about how you want to be perceived, will save you time and confusion.
