First, I want you to run a Google search of the keyword you want your site to be ranked for. In this example, we will use “pickle sickles”. Yes, there is such a thing and they don’t taste all that bad either.
We head to Google with world pickle sickle domination in mind, search for those words, and find out that we have a competitor:
No problem, we know how to compete.
We head over to Yahoo.com and enter our competitor’s link:
http://www.bobspicklepops.com/

Now click ‘Web Search’ and you will land on Yahoo’s Site Explorer.
In the drop down menus select ‘Show Inlinks: Except from this Domain’ and ‘To:Entire Site’.
This is what you’ll see:

Now you have a list of all the sites that link to your top competitor. The question now becomes, why aren’t they linking to you? Well, you’ve got to ask for the links. Go through the list and visit these web pages, then actually call the webmasters and ask for a link to your pickle sickle site. Explain the content and purpose of your site, how it relates to their site, and most importantly, that you are already linking to their site.
Chances are very good that they will be happy to link to your site. Now go to the next website on the list and make another call. And repeat. Do this is on a consistent basis and you’ll watch your site traffic increase and your rankings rise.
