How to Develop Link Diversity

by Peter Moorman on December 22, 2009

One of the best ways to rise in the rankings in Google for competitive keywords is to have inbound links pointing to not just your home page, but deeper pages within your site. The reason for this is that when Google considers rankings in its algorithm, one factor that matters is a diversity of in-bound links. If you can further diversify your inbound links by having them point to a variety of pages within your website (e.g. earlier articles rather than just the homepage) you increase the perceived authoritative value of your website in the rankings, and thus improve your rank.

For a more in-depth illustration of this concept, SEOmoz.org had a great post here about the importance of link diversity.

So how can you achieve link diversity on your website?

When link building for a new website, concentrate your efforts on having a variety of strong and soft sites linking to the main page of your site, i.e. “example.com”.  Once you’ve established your inbound links to your homepage, you can begin work on those deep links. Link diversity (inbound links to pages besides your main page) is important in Google’s algorithm. Although it’s a very time consuming project to find deep pages on your site and match those with websites who will link to them, it’s worth the effort. After you’ve built solid back links, you’ll see your keywords make a steady rise in Google’s rankings.

Once your keywords rise in the organic rankings in Google, you’ll be pleasantly surprised that other websites will link to your deeper pages without you having to ask. Don’t sweat about link diversity in the beginning of your strategy. But if you do stumble across a site that would be a good candidate for linking to one of your deeper pages, don’t hesitate to ask.

Building quality links is huge. It takes significant time and effort to get them, but it is totally worth it. Good post Peter!

Thanks Aaron. It's one of the toughest parts of SEO. But if you have great content, you will get links.
